Playlist for Celia
Livin' La Vida Loca- Ricky Martin
Post Written by: Gabriella, Found by: Gabriella
Description:
What livin’ la vida loca means is, living the crazy life. If you think
about it, Celia really does live a crazy life. She works in a big house
for a 150 year old drug lord and she raises a clone as her own son. That
is a pretty intense life. This song is by the lovely Latino, Ricky
Martin. It is very upbeat and it’s hard to not picture her dancing in
the kitchen to this song. Celia is a very upbeat and happy woman, so
this song really captures her personality. In the song it says, “She's
into superstitions black cats and voodoo dolls.” Celia totally is into
all of these things. She believes in monsters like the Chubacabra and La
Lorona. This song really matches Celia, so I could really see it on her
playlist.

El Chupacabra Song - By Unknown
Post Written by: Gabriella, Found by: Brea
Description: Celia
believes in some very strange things. She believes in the monster
called the Chupacabra. She tells Matt scary stories about it so that he
won’t want to leave his house in the poppy fields (pg. 17). This is a
very cute song, and we all can picture her playing this song while doing
her work to scare Matt. The song is a little hard to understand, but
the fact that it is about this creature that Matt thinks about so often
is important. We don’t know if Celia really believes in this story, or
if it is just a way to scare Matt. But whatever the case is, Celia would
use this as just another way to keep the clone in the house.

Mad World- Gary Jules
Post Written By: Brea. Found by: Brea.
We all think that Mad World was a great choice for Celia. Specifically when Celia finds Matt in the cell she went kind of hysterical. “Oh my God! Have they broken your legs? At least say something. They haven’t torn out your tongue? She began to wail like La Llorona.”- Farmer, Pg.48. We all can not help but think that after Ceila was thinking that the world has gone mad locking the boy up in a cell like a wild animal even if he is a clone. This song just so happens to capture perfectly a world that has gone mad. I can just see Ceila sitting in her room with this song jamming in the back and thinking about how Matt is being treated. This is why this song is perfect for Celia’s Playlist.

She's Leaving Home- The Beatles
Post Written By: Brea. Found by: Brea

Description: We thought this related to Celia because of the journey she took coming from her home country to the big house. “I packed everything I owned, including the Virgin I had brought from my village. About twenty of us crossed into the Ajo Mountains, and that’s where the coyote abandoned us.”- Farmer, pg.142. This song really represents packing up from home and saying goodbye to the world she knew and to welcome the journey that awaits. One part of the song really stood out to me. “Friday morning, at nine o’clock she is far away. Waiting to keep the appointment she made. Meeting a man from the motor trade.” This part of the song jumped out at me as soon as I read it. The reason for this is because Celia looks to a coyote to help her jump the border, similar to the girl in this song. All in all I think this would be the ideal song Celia would be listening to when she left Aztlan her home.

Lyrics-
http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/mika/anyotherworld.html
Description: This song relates to Celia because on page 143 she says “‘He laughed and asked if I had any skills. From that moment on I belonged to El Patron. I’ll always belong to him. He’ll never let me go.’” This line relates to the line in the song “Cause it’s all in the hands of a bitter, bitter man.’” By this I mean, Celia is trapped by El Patron, and everything is controlled by him. When Celia decided she would fallow a coyote, she knew it would change her life, but not in the way she hoped. Crossing the Farms would make her “Say goodbye to the world you thought you lived in”. Celia would have this song on her playlist because every girl’s got to have a “cry in her room to sad music” song somewhere.
Will There Really be a "Morning"? - Emily Dickinson

Lyrics-
http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/will-there-really-be-a-morning/
Description:
This song is a sad song that Celia would have listened to after Matt went “missing”. When you are sad, you long for a new day. this is where the line “Will there really be a ‘morning’? Is there such a thing as ‘day’? Can I see it from the mountains, if I were as tall as they?” When you are sad, everything just slurs together, and you don’t loose a sense of the world. That is what Celia would be feeling after she got home and saw the broken window. “Matt grabbed the big iron pot Celia used to make menudo and swung it before he could worry much about her reaction.” - pages 17-18. It would be really hard to lose someone you cared for so dearly, and it would probably make Celia wonder, “Does Matt still love me?” or, “Why would he want to escape? Did he go looking for me at work?”

Lyrics-
Before the Earth was round there was no end to things
And no one tried to measure what they knew
Everything was war but everyone knew love
And every contradiction was true
The sun worked twice as hard the moon was twice as far
And the sky was still honestly blue
The sky was still honestly blue
Description:
I think this song relates because it talks about people didn’t know how bad things really were and they worked and were mistreated, and everyone thought things were ok in the world, but they really aren’t and Celia understood that.
Lyrics-
Sleep, my child, sleep my love,
Sleep, piece of my heart,
For I have things to do,
To wash your nappies, sit down to sew...
This child wants me to lull him,
To sleep in my arms and on my heart.
Description:
We chose this song because Celia is the motherly figure toward Matt so we figured that a lullaby would suit her well in this playlist. Celia acts as Matt’s mother because e doesn’t have one and she has sacrificed so much to take care of him and love him.
Cast the Novel:
Tall and strong. Pg. 37
Severe looking. dark creases on either side of her mouth. Pg. 21
Possibility of long nails. Pg. 56
Pages 21-22:
-Shows minimal feeling to Matt, but usually has a sharp tone as she snapped at Matt when he was dirty.
-Was horrified when Mr. Alacran told her something (most likely that he was a clone) and became more hostile towards Matt in many different aspects (Physical and mental torture).

My Eternal Secret Love- Tito Rojas
Post Written and Song Found by Paige
Description:
The moment I heard this song, I started to groove to the music, swaying my shoulders to the rhythm and the ring of the trumpet. I could picture Celia moving to the melody as well, maybe when she would be cooking something scrumptious on the stove for her beloved Matt.
“Celia rocked Matt back and forth, all the while murmuring comforting words he could hardly take in. All he sensed was the music of her voice, the warmth of her arms, the fact that she was there.”- the House of the Scorpion pg. 123. The love between Celia and Matt is a strong and feels to exist eternally throughout Matt’s aging years. This is why I chose this song for Celia and why Celia might have this on her iPod, or a CD because El Patron wants the House to be old-fashioned. The chorus has a more connection to the beginning of the book to chapter 20 when you witness the passion between the two. A deeper sense can be taken from the song in further chapters. Farmer makes us believe in the eternal love shared within Matt and Celia.

Cast the Novel:
Stephen
The character Stephen is El Patron’s great-great grandchild. He is Tom and Benito’s brother. The way he was described in the book was he is 13 years old, he has sandy blond hair, and he was big for his age (pg. 13). In reading the book, we didn’t get very much information about his personality or many interactions with him and the other characters. What we do know is that he is willing and ready to take action in intense situations. Like when Matt cut himself, he jumped in as a leader and took control of that situation (pg. 19). But we also know that he can follow others and not be the leader, like when he learned that Matt was a clone and others were telling him to stay away, he followed what they did and ignored Matt.
Why we chose Mattie Liptak to play this character in The House of the Scorpion is because he really fits this character. The physical descriptions are similar, except that Mattie’s hair is brown. But that can easily be fixed with a bit of hair dye. Also, he is currently 14 years old, and this is a perfect age for this character. Since the book takes lace over a few years, we would be able to make him look both younger and older. This can be very adaptable. Another thing that made us choose him was his impressive movie credits. These roles and movies include Preston in The Door, George in Quarantine 2: Terminal, Steve in Ghoul, and Captain #8 in The Odd Life of Timothy Green. Mattie is a perfect choice for this character, and we couldn’t have picked a better person to be Stephen.

Tam Lin
Kevin McKidd (born 9 August 1973) is a Scottish television and film actor and director. Before playing the role of Owen Hunt in Grey's Anatomy, McKidd starred as Lucius Vorenus in the historical drama series Rome, Tommy in Danny Boyle's Trainspotting, and provided the voice of Captain John "Soap" Mactavish in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the sequel Modern Warfare 3.
McKidd was born and brought up in Elgin, in the north of Scotland. His father was a plumber and his mother, Kathleen, a secretary.[1][2] He attended Seafield Primary School and Elgin Academy, and was a member of the local amateur dramatic group, Moray Youth Theatre. Planning to study engineering, he attended the University of Edinburgh, but dropped out and instead enrolled at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh to study drama. He also joined Edinburgh University's student theatre company, Bedlam Theatre where he performed as a member of the improvised comedy troupe The Improverts.

The reason we picked Kevin McKidd:
"They were thick-necked and brutal, with flattened noses and scars wandering around their faces. They both had curling, brown hair that grew low upon their foreheads, ruddy faces, and bright blue eyes." - pg. 63
This is how Farmer has first described Tam Lin. As a big body guard with blue eyes, a ruddy face, and scars on their face. We do believe that what is described above Kevin McKidd possesses. He has the nice blue eyes, a thick neck, and with some hair dye and makeup, the brown hair and scars. Farmer also mentions "I picked this lot up in Scotland" -pg 63. To top it of Kevin McKidd is actually from Scotland. This will really help with the Scottish accent so it sounds pure and not fake. The book also mentions "But when Matt looked into Tam Lin's eyes, he was surprised to see a glint of friendliness." - pg 63. We think Kevin McKidd will be able to play the big body guard but also the man that befriends Matt, and surprising us all with his kindness. Lastly it mentions he is Muscular pg. 64 and Kevin McKidd does have the muscles!
Maria
Bailee Madison (born October 15, 1999) is an American child actress. She is most famous for her role in the 2007 film adaptation ofKatherine Paterson's Newbery Medal-winning novel Bridge to Terabithia in which she plays May Belle Aarons, the younger sister of Jesse Aarons. She films a webshow with her babysitter and fellow actress, Samantha Droke.[1] Madison also starred in the horror film Don't Be Afraid of the Dark as Sally Hirst, and appeared in the Adam Sandler film Just Go With It. Her elder sister, Kaitlin Riley, is also an actress.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bailee_Madison
Why we picked Bailee Madison:
We picked Bailee Madison to play Maria based on how we pictured her and her personality. She is supposed to be about 6 years old and when we saw Bailee Madison we thought of her as young and innocent. In the book Maria's personality comes off as sweet, innocent, and caring. When we look at Bailee Madison we seen those characteristics come out through her smile and face. Also on page 45 it says that she has dark hair so that was one of the main things we were looking for.
Emilia
Madison Danielle Davenport (born November 22, 1996) is an American actress and singer, best known for her role as Quillo in Over the Hedge. Davenport has also starred in Kit Kitredge: An American Girl as Kit's best friend Ruthie Smithens.
We chose Davenport to play Emilia in The House of The Scorpion because she is very pretty and has blue eyes, which Farmer described on page 13 in her book. she also looks young, and Emilia is 13. there is a look about her that is helpful and kind, as we see in Emilia after the broken glass on page 19, and she also seems like she can "shun" someone very well, as We see on page 26, "'That's disgusting. Clones aren't people,' Cried Emilia". We will have to dye Davenport’s hair black.
Rosa
Severe looking. dark creases on either side of her mouth. Pg. 21
Possibility of long nails. Pg. 56
Pages 21-22:
-Shows minimal feeling to Matt, but usually has a sharp tone as she snapped at Matt when he was dirty.
-Was horrified when Mr. Alacran told her something (most likely that he was a clone) and became more hostile towards Matt in many different aspects (Physical and mental torture).
Leisha Hailey
Leisha Hailey is an actress who grew up in Nebraska and attended American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. She has appeared in television commercials for Yoplait Yogurt, played leading role in school play “Oliver”, appeared in Ellen, played Lucy in the 1997 film “All Over Me”, and her well-known role in “The L Word” where she played as Alice Pieszecki.
She is 5’ 6” in height, a vegetarian and also formed a band called The Murmurs which was later changed to Gush in 2001. For the Denton Record Chronicle’s “Top 10 Ladies Who Made 2004 Memorable”, Leisha was one of the ladies chosen.
In my mind, I thought that Rosa appeared to have black hair and had a creepy atmosphere that surrounded her. Leisha Hailey would be a good actress to play Rosa in “the House of the Scorpion” because her eyes and facial expressions could portray the cold depth and fear that Rosa expressed throughout the book. She seems to match the same age and height as Rosa which will be technically correct to Farmer’s description. The problem that might arise is that in the book “the House of the Scorpion” Rosa has a relationship with Willum and Leisha Hailey is lesbian. Even though she might not get the same feeling of love we get from Rosa in the novel, there is parts when Rosa gets angry at Willum (pg. 38-39) and this be a powerful acting part for her. Since our team agrees with the actress, we agree that Leisha Hailey would be best to act Rosa.
